The author already wrote it’s own Ruby implementation (which runs on top of PHP engine). It’s said that every true smalltalker tries to write his own VM for Smalltalk, better than every other (based on this, I’m true smalltalker). Maybe it’s time to say that every rubyist tries to write it’s own Ruby compiler :-)
A natural question is: why java programmers never ever thinks about writing their own Java VM/compiler? What do you thing?

Yesterday, I’ve had a short presentation of SmallRuby at the ESUG 09 conference. I only had less than 10 minutes, so there was not enough time do some (impressive) demo, however it seems that people are getting interested in this piece of software - have look at:

I must point out that SmallRuby is a not one man show. I would like to thank namely to Jan Karpisek, who is doing a great job on SmallRuby, to Michal Pise for his suggestions and finally to Pavel Strnad, who explained us some aspects of the Ruby language. Thank you, guys!
Recently, Jan did some initial benchmarking of SmallRuby. Results are amazing. For example, in methodCall benchmark, SmallRuby is 40 times faster than Ruby 1.8. This is not bad, I think. SmallRuby exception handling is much slower than in YARV (Ruby 1.9), but still faster than Ruby 1.8 a JRuby. Have a look a the benchmark page
Last friday, I’ve presented SmallRuby at Smallallk Jihlava 09, an unofficial meeting of unofficial czech smalltalk user group. At least, the live demo did not crash :-). Slides are here
